It’s common knowledge that listening to music in your target language helps a lot in terms of listening skills and vocabulary acquisition. I’m actually a bit picky in terms of the kind of music I listen to (I hate 99,9% of songs produced in my country of origin, just to make an example) and, in general, I’m not a great fan of Asian pop music [with a few illustrious exceptions, of course].
Nonetheless, in my almost 4 years of Chinese study I’ve managed to find a few tunes that I really enjoy listening to and singing along with (making 80% of the words up, of course 🙃). I have to say that dramas are a good source from this point of view!
林凡 – 五天幾年 [The Fierce Wife OST]
I already knew Freya Lim for singing 明明愛你 in In A Good Way, even though I didn’t love that song very much. This one is a bit slow compared to what I usually listen to, but has a great rhythm nonetheless and her voice is just stunning.
符致逸 – Good Morning Hard City [In A Good Way OST]
This is one of my favourite songs of all times, and not just among Chinese singers. I absolutely love the lyrics as I feel they totally speak to me XD plus I have great respect and admiration for Adrian Fu who, I remember reading somewhere, has a day job in a computer office or something and composes music in his free time. Impressive!
胡宇威 – 別說GoodBye [Love Check Charge OST]
I like the way Chinese songs integrate English words in their lyrics, though in the case of George Hu this has an additional meaning as he was born and raised in the US. The drama for which this songs plays as soundtrack (Love Check Charge) is not among my favourites, and I think this song helped a lot to bright and spicy things up a bit. George Hu sings the opening for that drama as well, but it didn’t catch my attention as much.
伍佰 & China Blue – 牽掛 [In A Good Way OST]
Another IAGW song, another all time favourite of mine. This is the quintessence of the rock ballad, heartbreaking and goos-bump-inducing and everything else. I have a soft spot for charismatic rockstars like Wu Bai, and this feels a lot more like something I would normally enjoy.
李玟 – 能不能 [A Good Wife OST]
This song is great and the video is lovely, BUT. Her voice. Can we stop for one second and talk about her voice? There are a lot of people who can sing, even sing well, but Coco Lee is on a completely other level. She has total control over her vocal range and makes even a regular love song with regular lyrics absolutely stand out.
Luhan 鹿晗 – That Good Good 有点儿意思
Stumbled upon this while specifically searching for some C-pop to initiate me to holy Asian pop singers market. I’m still not a fan tbh, but this sons is upbeat enough to make me wanna listen to it from time to time. And yes, 鹿晗非常帅, which is always a bonus.
戴佩妮 – Sing It Out
Such an amazing song for such and amazing voice. Discovered while looking for My Chemical Romance’s ‘Sing’ video on youtube 😅 there are songs that require time to be fully loved and appreciated, but this one, this caught my attention from the very first moment.
伍佰 – 单程车票
It’s fun, it’s ironic and it’s Wu Bai – there’s only one thing in this world that I love more than a proper rockstar, and it’s a proper rockstar not taking himself/herself too seriously. This tune is so irresistible I can’t help but sing and dance along every time I listen to it.
That’s my collection of Chinese songs for now – if anyone has any suggestions for good quality Chinese rock let me know! 🙂
